Jay-Z known in private life as Shawn Corey Carter is an American rapper, record executive, and entrepreneur. He was born on 4 December 1969 in New York City.

Carter is one of the most influential artists in hip-hop history and has been very instrumental in the commercial success of artists like J.Cole, Kanye West, and Rihanna.

His musical career began in the late 1980s, from which he made the leap to co-found Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995. His maiden studio album titled Reasonable Doubt was released in 1996; the album received rave reviews and made him a force to reckon with in the music business.

Jay-Z’s parents are Adnis Reeves (father) and Gloria Carter (mother).

Adnis Reeves

Adnis Reeves is known as the father of Jay-Z and his three older siblings; Michelle, Andrea, and Eric.

Reeves whose father was a pastor had drinking problems and abandoned his family when Jay-Z was 11.

Reeves died of liver failure just three months after meeting and reconciling with his son Jay-Z, on 19 June 2003.

Gloria Carter

Gloria worked for the New York City comptroller for 30 years, moving from clerk to investment analyst.

After 13 years of marriage, she and Jay-Z’s father separated, leaving her to raise her four children — two sons, Eric and Shawn (Jay-Z), and two daughters, Michelle and Andrea.

From having to take an extra job as a security guard to make ends meet, she is the president of the Shawn Carter Foundation.
