Her parents were both originally from Puerto Rico and moved to the U.S. mainland as children. David was a computer technician at Guardian Insurance Company after he had served in the military.

Guadalupe was a homemaker during the first ten years of Lopez’s existence. She then became a Tupperware salesperson and a kindergarten, as well as a gym teacher. After 33 years of marriage, the couple divorced in the 1990s.
