In a frilly pink tracksuit, Lycett introduced athletes from Asian nations while also striking out at the UK government.

“I’m going to do something now that the British government doesn’t always do, and welcome some foreigners – this time from the region of Asia,” he jokingly said with the 30,000 people who had joined the ceremony at the Alexander Stadium giving out a big laugh.

He later clarified on Twitter that it was “just a bit of banter” after the ceremony was over and tagged Home Secretary Priti Patel in the post with a video of his performance raking in over a million views on Twitter in less than 24 hours.
