Dubbed the “white brother with soul,” he was one of the most prolific guitarists in Motown Records’ in-house studio band, the Funk Brothers.

Born on December 13, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, United States, Messisana died of natural causes on early Monday, April 4, 2022, at his son Joel Messina’s Northville home, at the age of 93.

In 2003, Messina won two Grammys along with the Funk Brothers. He won for the soundtrack to the documentary “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.” One year later, the Recording Academy awarded Messina and the Funks a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Motown used many musicians, but you will most often hear a three-guitar line with Robert White on one side of Messina and Eddie Willis on the other (augmented by Wah Wah Watson and Dennis Coffey).
