Joseph Tsai was born in January 1964 in Taipei, Taiwan.
He is a Taiwanese-born Canadian businessman, lawyer, and philanthropist.
Tsai is a co-founder and executive vice chairman of the Alibaba Group and the owner of multi-franchises in the American sports industry including the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the San Diego Seals of the National Lacrosse League among others.
Tsai came to the United States at the age of 13 and attended the Lawrenceville School, New Jersey where he played football as an inside linebacker and lacrosse. He went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Economics and East Asian studies at Yale University.
While at Yale, he played for the school’s lacrosse team.
He also earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from Yale Law School.
He began his career as a tax associate with Sullivan & Cromwell, a law firm.
