John DiStaso was an American political journalist from New Hampshire.
He edited the NH Journal, an online website and news portal that was founded by the local Republican activists. Before this, he worked as the correspondent of The Union Leader, a daily publication based from Manchester, New Hampshire, for 34 years. He also reported for WMUR-TV.
DiStaso was raised in Paterson, New Jersey. He began his career at The Union Leader as a correspondent before becoming an employee reporter in the early 1980s. In 1982, DiStaso wrote the newspaper’s political column, “The Granite Status.”
He is also credited with the first use of the term “Republican in Name Only” or RINO in the year 1992.
DiStaso has been suspected of Republican bias in a Columbia Journalism Review article for an interview that he conducted together with George W. Bush presidential advisor Karl Rove.
DiStaso was one of the moderators for the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate debate that took place on the 22nd of January 2004 in Goffstown, New Hampshire. He also served as an expert panelist for debates hosted through CNN as well as NBC.
