John Fetterman, a member of the Democratic Party, has been serving as the junior United States senator from Pennsylvania since 2023. Prior to his current role, he held the position of the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, from 2006 to 2019 and served as the 34th lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania from 2019 to 2023.
Widely recognized as a progressive and populist figure, Fetterman advocates for healthcare as a fundamental right, criminal justice reform, the abolition of capital punishment, an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour, and the legalization of cannabis.
Fetterman pursued a finance degree at Albright College and obtained an MBA from the University of Connecticut. His professional journey began in the insurance industry, but he later transitioned to public service, joining AmeriCorps and earning a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University.
Fetterman’s involvement with AmeriCorps brought him to Braddock in 2004, where he became the mayor in 2005. In that role, he aimed to rejuvenate the former steel town through initiatives focused on art and youth programs.
Although Fetterman ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016 and secured the third position in the Democratic primary, he successfully ran for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in 2018. Notably, he defeated incumbent Mike Stack in the Democratic primary and won the election alongside incumbent Governor Tom Wolf.
During his tenure, Fetterman gained national attention for his advocacy to legalize cannabis statewide and his vocal opposition to President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud in Pennsylvania.
