Stahl was born on the 23rd of March 1953 in Scotland and was raised in Sauchie, Clackmannanshire.
John educated at Alloa Academy and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. From 1975 until 1976, Stahl employed as assistant director at the Darlington Drama Centre. The film debut came in 1976.
He became famous due to his character of Tom Inverdarroch Kerr in the TV series High Road, in which he appeared as a series regular from 1982 until 2003. In addition, he played the character of Rickard Karstark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, appearing in the second and third seasons.

He died on March 2, 2022, at the age of 68 in Isle of Lewis, as announced by his agent in a statement. However, his agent didn’t disclose the cause of John Stahl’s death.
“We were fortunate to work with John on Mary Stuart and The James Plays. His passing is a huge loss to the industry, and he will be sorely missed.
“Our thoughts are with his loved ones,” their statement obtained by Metro UK said.
