John Hardin Stearns was born on 21 August 1951 in Denver, Colorado. He was an American professional baseball catcher and coach who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies.

He played only one game for the Phillies before moving to the Mets.

Stearns who was nicknamed the ” Bad Dude” played collegiate baseball at the University of Colorado at Boulder where he was a two-sport star having played football too.

He had an injury-plagued career which led to his retirement in 1986. In 1989, he returned to baseball when he was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers as a scout and minor league instructor.

Stearns went on to work with Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds, and New York Mets among others.

He was married to Martha Jo with whom he had a son called Justin Stearn.
They had been married since 1977.
