Johnny Grier was an American football official for 23 years in the National Football League from 1981 to 2004.
After starting in the NFL as a field judge, he became the first African-American referee in the NFL’s history of the start of the 1988 NFL season.
Grier officiated in one Super Bowl, Super XXII in 1988. This was his final game as a field judge. It was also the game in which Doug Williams became the first African-American to win the Super Bowl.
He wore the number 23 uniform on the field. This uniform is still worn by Jerome Boger (another African-American referee).
Grier attended college at the University of the District of Columbia.
Grier started officiating football when he was 18 years old. He began as a high school football official back in 1965. Later, he moved to college football in 1972, and finally the NFL in 1981.
He was a referee for one year before he became a coach. In 1989, he was the first black head coach in the NFL’s modern era.
