Jon Rahm is a professional golfer from Spain. He held the World Amateur Golf Ranking number one position for a record 60 weeks before becoming world number one in the Official World Golf Ranking after winning the Memorial Tournament in July 2020.
Rahm decided to turn professional after playing in the US Open. As a result, he was no longer eligible for the 2016 Open Championship exemption. Rahm took part in his first professional event, the Quicken Loans National.
He ended in a tie for third place, four strokes behind the winner, Billy Hurley III, after having held the lead for the first two rounds of the competition.
Rahm’s performance at the Quicken Loans National was enough to secure him a berth in The Open because it was a stop on the Open Qualifying Series.
Rahm was admitted as a Special Temporary Member for the remainder of the season due to his tie for second-place result at the RBC Canadian Open. He was able to earn enough points as a non-member to play on the PGA Tour in 2017.
