Jon Michael Wefald was an American educator and served as the twelfth president of Kansas State University.
Wefald was born in Minneapolis and moved at the age of six, together with family members from the city, to Minot, North Dakota.
After graduating from high school, he enrolled in Pacific Lutheran University, where he earned a B.A. in the field of history in 1959.
Wefald later earned his M.A. in political science and history at Washington State University in 1961 and a Ph.D. in the field of history from the University of Michigan in 1965.
The year 1965 was the first time Wefald came back to Minnesota and took his first faculty post in Gustavus Adolphus College, where He taught for five years in the field of history.
From 1971 until 1977, he was Minnesota’s Secretary of Agriculture and also gave guest lectures.
He was elected President in 1977 at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota. Then, in 1982, he became Chancellor of the six state university system of Minnesota.
