Tanaka suffered from a variety of major illnesses, and was diagnosed with paratyphoid fever in her adopted daughter at the age of 35. She underwent pancreatic surgery at the age of 45. In 2006, Tanaka had a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. She had surgery at the age of aged 103.

Her longevity and life span were noticed by her son’s son and his wife after four years when they released a book titled”In good and Bad Times, 107 years old. At aged 114, she was interviewed by KBC in September 2017.

On the 9th of March, Tanaka was officially presented with the “World’s Oldest Living Person” and “World’s Oldest Living Woman” titles from Guinness World Records, verifying her claim to be long-lived.

On the 19th of September 2020, she set a record for the longest-lived Japanese person in history and also the third-oldest person in the world after surpasing Nabi Tajima’s of 117 years, and 260 days. Tanaka has said that she would like to reach 120, but unfortunately, she passed away at the age of 119.
