Kanye West has requested that his name be changed from Kanye Omari West to “Ye” in Los Angeles.
According to Los Angeles Superior Court documents obtained by The Associated Press, the eccentric rapper, 44, formally filed a petition to change his name to his nickname Ye, with no middle or last name.
West attributed the change to “personal reasons.” The documents were dated August 11, but they were not received by the court system until Tuesday, August 24.
Before the petition can become official, it must be approved by a judge.
In California, unless there is evidence that a name change is intended to commit fraud, the judge is likely to grant the request.
This is not the first time West has attempted to avoid using his full name. On Twitter in 2018, the rapper announced that he is no longer “the being formally known as Kanye West… I am YE.”
