Karen Julia Carney MBE was born on 1 August 1987 in Solihull, England. She was an English sports journalist and professional footballer who played as a winger and midfielder.

Carney joined Birmingham City Ladies as an 11-year and featured in several age-level teams for the club. Her senior debut was made against Fulham Ladies at the age of 14. She was a two-time Football Association National Young Player of Year winner.

She attended St. Ambrose Barlow Catholic Primary School and St. Peter’s RC Secondary School, Solihull, and went to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science from Loughborough University.

Carney joined premier league side Arsenal Ladies in 2006 and went on to win the FA Women’s Premier League, FA Women’s Cup, FA Women’s Premier League Cup, and the UEFA Women’s Cup with them.

She also played for the Chicago Red Stars and Chelsea and was part of the English women’s team at the 2012 London Olympics.
