Kelis Rogers, known mononymously as Kelis, is an American singer. At the age of 14, she was accepted at New York’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, in which she began to learn how to play the saxophone. She was also selected for the Girls Choir of Harlem.
When she finished her high school, Kelis worked on a number of jobs, before getting a backup vocal spot on the album track titled “Fairytalez” which was released by American hip-hop group Gravediggaz.
Kelis then started working closely with producers Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo, known as The Neptunes that resulted in her signing with Virgin Records in 1998.
Kelis has been recognized at the Brit Awards, Q Awards, NME Awards, as well as the Grammy Awards ceremonies. Her music output as a singer and as a featured artist includes a wide range of styles.
Kelis Rogers was born and raised in the Frederick Douglass Houses on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Her name comes from a combination of her dad’s last name Kenneth (1944-2000) along with her mother’s last name Eveliss.
Her father Kenneth is an American African jazz musician as well as a Pentecostal minister, and was formerly a professor at Wesleyan University. Her mother Eveliss is a Chinese-Puerto Ricon fashion designer who encouraged Kelis to pursue a singing career. She has three sisters, and Kelis being the third of four sisters.

Kelis is the mother of three children. She had her first child with Nas Knight Jones, her ex-husband.
Aside from Knight, Kelis has two other children with deceased husband, Mike Mora, a son, and a daughter. Shepherd Mora is the son and Galilee Mora is the daughter, born in September 2020.
Mike, who was diagnosed in September 2020 with stage 4 stomach cancer, died March in 2022.
Knight Jones
With her ex-husband Nas, she welcomed Knight Jones, her first child, in July 2009. She is now 12 years old.
Sheperd Mora
Kelis was blessed with her second child in December 2015, along with Mike Mora, her late husband.
Kelis kept Shepherd’s pregnancy secret until she attended the Los Angeles Women’s Expo in October that year.
Shepherd Mora is 6 years now, he was born in December 2015.
Galilee Mora
Galilee Mora is the daughter of Kelis and Mike Mora, she is a year old now, born in September 2020.
