Kunimitsu Takahashi died at the age of 82 after a battle with cancer. He was born on January 29, 1940, in Tokyo, Japan.
Nicknamed “Kuni-san”, he is often referred to as being the “father of drifting”. His racing career ran from 1958 until 1999.
He was a motorcycle racer between the years 1958 to 1963, in when he became the very first Japanese driver to take home the World Grand Prix, taking four victories at the highest level of competition.
A crash-related injury in 1962 led him to moving to four-wheelers in the year 1965. Since then, he has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in class, and became Four-time All-Japan Sports Prototype Champion, and has also been a winner at the top of Japanese Top Formula, JTC and JGTC. The final win he won as driver in 1999 was at the age of 59.
His team of racing, Team Kunimitsu, has had multiple championships won during Super GT. He was chairperson of the GT Association, the organizers of the Super GT series, from 1993 until 2007.
