“We are saddened by the loss of Malathi Das who passed away peacefully on 12 April 2022.
A graduate of NUS Law Class of 1992, Malathi has helped to shape and influence the law and its practice.
A dispute resolution lawyer of close to 30 years’ experience, her forte was in family disputes. She joined the faculty as an Adjunct Professor teaching Family Law in 2020, and was also the Subject Coordinator for the Family Law course for Part B at the Singapore Institute of Legal Education.
She was an accredited Associate Mediator and Family Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre and among the earliest of Child Representatives appointed by the Family Justice Courts and a trained Parenting Co-ordinator.
She was also a Member of the Family Law and Children’s Rights Chapter of the Singapore Academy of Law’s Professional Affairs Committee and a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers.
Deeply committed to her areas of interest which included gender, elder and children’s issues, and advocacy for the disadvantaged, Malathi served as international law organisation LAWASIA’s first woman and Singaporean President in LAWASIA’s 46-year history, and was appointed its Distinguished Member in 2019. LAWASIA has a strong Asia-Pacific focus on issues concerning the legal profession, human rights, access to justice and capacity-building.
She was appointed the Law Society of Singapore’s first woman Pro Bono Ambassador in 2011 and was also a Past President of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) and of the Zonta Club of Singapore, the Singapore Chapter of Zonta International, whose mission is the empowerment of women through advocacy and service.
Malathi was also a Board Member of local non-profit Diverse Abilities Dance Collective (DADC), a community initiative by the company to create a co-existing space for persons with disabilities.
