Lisa Ann Murkowski is a politician and attorney from the United States who has served as Alaska’s senior senator since 2002. Murkowski is the second-oldest Republican senator after Maine’s Susan Collins. Murkowski, like Collins, is frequently cited as one of the Senate’s most liberal Republicans and an important swing vote. Murkowski assumed leadership of Alaska’s congressional delegation following the death of Representative Don Young.
Murkowski was born in Ketchikan, Alaska Territory, to Nancy Rena (née Gore) and Frank Murkowski.
Her mother is of Irish and French Canadian descent, and her paternal great-grandfather is of Polish descent.
Her family had to move around the state as a child because of her father’s job as a banker.
She earned a B.A. in economics from Georgetown University in 1980, the same year her father was elected to the United States Senate. She was the 1980 Alaska Cherry Blossom Princess and a member of the sorority Pi Beta Phi. In 1985, she received her J.D. from Willamette University College of Law.
