Mable John was born on 3 November 1930 in Bastrop, Louisiana.
She was the eldest of nine siblings including R&B singer Little Willie John.
She went to Cleveland Intermediate School and Pershing High School after which she gained employment as an insurance representative at Friendship Mutual Insurance Agency.
She went to study at Lewis Business College for a couple of years.
John was performing songs written by Berry Gordy and was first signed to United Artists but no releases were made, so she signed for Gordy as his first artist on his record label Tamla.
Her first single titled “Who Wouldn’t Love a Man Like That? was released in 1960. She was a part of Raelette, a girl’s group that provided backing for many of Ray Charles’s hits.
John was recognized by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1994 with a Pioneer Award.
