Maria Sakkari was born on 25 July 1995 in Athens, Greece. She is a professional tennis player from Greece.
Sakkari was introduced to the sport of tennis at the age of 6 by her parents. At age 18 she moved to Barcelona to train.
Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer are the tennis players she counts as her idols. She has stated that she favors hard and clay surfaces and her preferred shot is the serve.
Maria turned professional in 2015 and is coached by Tom Hill.
The Greek has one WTA singles title under her belt; she won the 2019 Morocco Open. Two years prior she was a semi-finalist at the 2017 Wuhan Open.
In 2021 she reached the semi-finals of both the French Open and the US Open becoming the first Greek woman to reach a Grand Slam semi-final.
