The final president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, passed away at age 91, according to Russian official media and his personal press secretary, Vladimir Polyakov, who confirmed the news to CBS News.
Gorbachev’s office had earlier stated that he was receiving treatment at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow, according to The Associated Press. His cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
From 1985 until 1991, Gorbachev was the Communist Party of the Soviet Union’s general secretary. He oversaw a deescalation of the Cold War during his tenure in this position, which culminated in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the USSR.
