Robert Noah Biography
Robert Noah is a German who founded one of the very first restaurants that were integrated located in Johannesburg during apartheid, with the granting of a special license to serve blacks. Noah is also the father of Trevor Noah, a South African comedian, TV host writer, producer political commentator, writer, and actor.
Robert Noah hated racism and homogeneity of any sort. He felt this sensation due to lack of understanding of the reasons behind apartheid. He was unable to comprehend why white people discovered Africa when they weren’t interested in the black people.
Robert established the first restaurant that was integrated in Johannesburg in the period of apartheid. He obtained the use of a specific license that was specifically designed to serve blacks. The licenses were granted by the government due to the need. The restaurant’s establishment was a great success. However, some whites petitioned to have Robert’s restaurant closed down.
The inspectors initially attempted to close the restaurant because of health concerns, however, Robert, as with the majority of Swiss-Germans, was not filthy. They came up with a different method in requiring that he have separate toilets for every patron of different races. This was a difficult job, and Robert did not want to comply. He eventually shut the restaurant.
Following apartheid, Robert moved to a new area that was segregated, called Yeoville. He was able of taking Noah to play at the nearby park along with children from all races, as there was no worry of having to go to prison. Father and son gathered on every Sunday afternoon at Robert’s house. This was an excellent opportunity for Noah, who was able to avoid black churches.
Robert is the one who cooks his favourite dinner whenever his son comes to visit, and he usually serves A German dish known as Rosti, which is a potato pancake served with gravy. Robert is a calm man, however, he was a great father who was always attentive, caring, and generous.
Robert Noah relocated to Cape Town and nearly lost contact with his son Trevor when Trevor was only 13. A little over seven years had passed, and Patricia encouraged Trevor to travel into Cape Town, where he reunited with his father.
The book included the entire cutouts that featured Trevor’s daily news stories in local newspapers. Some were cutouts that featured ads for his stand-up show. Up to now, Trevor Noah doesn’t know anything about Robert’s extended family, or how his life was prior to Patricia. The only thing Noah can remember is his father being an executive cook in Canada and New York who opened some restaurants and bars within South Africa.
