Rockne “Rocky” Crowningburg Freitas was born on 7 September 1945 in Kailua, Honolulu County, Hawaii.

He played in the American National Football League for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions as an offensive tackle from 1968 to 1978.

While at Oregon State University, he played college football and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1972 season. Makoa, his son, was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2003 NFL draft.

After a professional career that lasted more than a decade, Rockne served in several leadership roles in the area of education, including at GRG Enterprises, Ke Ali’i Pauahi Foundation, and Kamehameha Schools.

Freitas also served for six years as the chancellor of Hawai’i Community College, and as vice president for university relations for the University of Hawai’i System.

Rockne retired as the chancellor of the University of Hawaii at West Oahu in 2015.
