Roman Arkadyevich Abramovich is a Russian oligarch, billionaire, businessman, and politician. He’s the owner of Chelsea Football Club, an English professional football club based in Fulham, West London.

Abramovich was a close friend of the former Russian president Boris Yeltsin and current Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich is the primary owner of the private investment company Millhouse LLC, and is most well-known outside of Russia because he is the owner of Chelsea Football Club, an English professional football club based in Fulham, West London. He was the Governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug from 2000 until 2008.

Abramovich made himself rich in the years after the fall of the Soviet Union, obtaining Russian state-owned assets for a price that were far below the market value during Russia’s controversial privatization program of loans-for-shares.

Abramovich began his career in the business world while he was serving in the army. Abramovich began his career as a street-trader and later as a mechanic in a local factory.

Abramovich studied at the Gubkin Institute of Oil and Gas, Moscow. He then traded commodities for Runicom, a Swiss trading company.

Abramovich was able to legallyize his business after perestroika opened up privatization opportunities in the Soviet Union in 1988. Olga and he set up a doll-making company. His wealth grew from oil conglomerates to the pig farms within a few years. He traded in timber, sugar, and other products.

He was arrested in 1992 and sent to prison for a case involving theft of government property.

Roman Abramovich Marriage Parents: Father, Mother & Siblings

Abramovich is from a Jewish family. His mother, Irina Vasilievna Abramovich (nee Mikhailenko), was a music teacher who died when Roman was just one year old. His father, Aron (Arkady) Abramovich Leibovich (1937-1969), worked in the Komi ASSR’s economic council.

Roman’s maternal grandparents were Vasily Mikhailenko and Faina Borisovna Grutman, both were born in Ukraine. Faina Borisovna Grutman, Roman’s maternal grandmother, fled from Ukraine in the early days of World War II. Irina was three years old at the time.

Roman’s paternal grandparents, Nachman Leibovich and Toybe (Tatyana) Stepanovna Abramovich, were Belarusian Jews. They lived in Belarus, and after the revolution they moved to Taurage, Lithuania, with the Lithuanian spelling of the family name being Abramavicius.

The Soviet Union annexed Lithuania in 1940, the Soviets “cleared the anti-Soviet criminal and socially hazardous element” just before the Nazi German invasion of the USSR. Whole families were sent to Siberia. Abramovich’s grandparents were separated when deported.

The father, mother and children; Leib, Abram, and Aron (Arkady) were all in separate cars. Many deportees were killed in the camps. Abramovich’s grandfather was one of them. Nachman Leibovich died in 1942 at the NKVD camp in the settlement Resheti, Krasnoyarsk Territory.

Abramovich lost his parents at the tender age of four. He was raised by family members and spent most of his childhood in the Komi Republic, northern Russia. Abramovich is Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia and a trustee of Moscow Jewish Museum.
