Serie A has joined some of the top leagues in Europe that are in support of clubs unwilling to release players for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month.
Ghanaian players in Serie A invited for the upcoming games will be blocked from joining the Black Stars for the doubleheader against Ethiopia on September 3 and South Africa on September 6.
The Serie A told Italian clubs on Wednesday not to release players to countries where they would have to quarantine on their return to Italy.
Emmanuel Gyasi who plays for Spezia in Serie A is likely to be blocked from joining the Black Stars, especially as the country has to travel to South Africa.
South Africa has been flagged by most countries due to COVID-19.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pleaded with European clubs to release players for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“Together we have shown solidarity and unity in the fight against COVID-19,” Infantino said. “Now, I am urging everyone to ensure the release of international players for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.”, Infantino said in a statement.
Ghana will take on Ethiopia on September 3, 2o21 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium before travelling to Johannesburg on September 6 to play South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
