Sports pundit and former Editor of Kotoko Express, Jerome Otchere has labeled the spending of over $5m at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as a joke.
The Black Stars exited the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup at the group phase, finishing bottom of their group with three points. Their only win at the tournament came against the Republic of Korea in their second group match.
Ghana lost to Portugal in the group opener and also against bitter rivals Uruguay in their final group game.
Mustapha Yussif, Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports in an address on the floor of parliament stated that a total sum of $5,171,040 was expended out of the $8,166,020 budget for the team.
In his reaction to the revelation by the Sports Minister, Jerome Otchere said the expenditure was a complete joke.
He said that Ghanaians must hold the Ghana Football Association (GFA) responsible for how the money was spent.
He also described as unacceptable the revelation by a management committee member of the Black Stars that each member received $100,000.00.
Mr. Otchere said it was unimaginable for a team that won only a game at a tournament to come back with a balance of $3m, more so there is very little development in the game.
