Stephen McClaren is an English professional football manager and former player who was born on May 3, 1961, in Fulford, United Kingdom.
Between 1999 and 2001, McClaren served as assistant manager at Manchester United. His managerial career started at Middlesbrough, in the Premier League.
Middlesbrough won the League Cup during his tenure in 2004, their first and only major trophy. They were also runners-up in the UEFA Cup in 2006.
In August 2006, he was appointed manager of England’s national team. However, he was fired a year later, after England failed to qualify for UEFA Euro 2008. This was the subject of intense media criticism.
McClaren was appointed manager of Dutch club Twente in 2008, with whom he won the club’s first ever Eredivisie championship in 2010.
Soon afterwards, he took over at VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, though he was dismissed mid-season due to poor results. After a short spell as manager of Nottingham Forest, he returned to Twente in 2012.
McClaren resigned in early 2013 after his second stint at Twente proved less successful. Later that year, he returned to Derby, leading the club to the play-offs for the 2013-14 season. However, he failed to win promotion and was fired in 2015.
He was soon appointed as head coach of Newcastle United, but was dismissed after less than a year after winning only six of his 28 Premier League matches in charge.
McClaren was Derby manager for a second time, from October 2016 through March 2017. McClaren was also appointed Queens Park Rangers manager in 2018. He was then fired in April 2019.
