Senator Collins was born in Caribou, Maine on 7 December 1952 into a family of 8. She is a graduate of St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York. She began her career as an assistant staff for Senator William Cohen in 1975.

Collins was president of the student council during her High School days at Caribou High School. She was also chosen to participate in the U.S. Senate Youth Program during her senior year of High School.

Thomas Daffron is married to Senator Susan Collins. They have been married since 11 August 2012. He was born in New York on 23 January 1949.

The 73-year-old Daffron is a lobbyist who worked at Jefferson Consulting Group as a chief operating officer between 2006 and 2016.
