John Edward Szeles, better known by the stage name The Amazing Johnathan, was an American comedian and magician.
His routine consisted of a mix of comedy, interactions with one particular audience participant, and some genuine illusions. From 2001 until 2014, his show was a regular mainstay at Las Vegas.
The self-described “Freddy Krueger of Comedy”, Szeles performed wearing his ever-present headband, and his shows often featured gore. For instance, playing the role of sucking his own eyeball hanging from the ceiling and cutting his wrists and even skewering his own tongue.
He also had a close relationship with fellow entertainer Criss Angel and was able to help Angel perform various illusions, including his three appearances on Mindfreak.
He was born on September 9, 1958, Detroit, Michigan, United States.
He moved to California in the 1970s and began his professional career performing on the streets of San Francisco. In 1983, he first appeared on TV in The 8th Annual Young Comedians Show. Later, he was the host of Ruckus, a short-lived 1991 syndicated game/variety show.
From the mid-80s through the mid 2000s, he appeared on various talk and variety programs. He was credited for his only acting performance, The Obligatory Episode of The Weird Al Show as Uncle Johnathan.
He has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman several times, including a record number of 24 on Fox’s Comic Strip Live. He has also had specials on Comedy Central, such as Comedy Central Presents, Lounge Lizards, and his own one-hour special, Wrong on Every Level.
Eugene, his uncle, was the one who taught him his first card trick that “started this whole mess.” He gave Eugene the special. In 2005’s documentary The Aristocrats, he was featured. Johnathan had a success in Australia after his appearances on Channel 9’s Hey Hey It’s Saturday.
Szeles also wrote a book about practical jokes titled Every Trick in the Book. This compilation includes both classic and simple magic tricks, as well as his original material. He was currently finishing his memoirs, Drive It Like You Stole It.
