Thomas Lee Bass is a Greek-American musician who is a founder member of the heavy-metal band Motley Crue. In addition to being the band’s drummer for a long time, Lee founded rap metal band Methods of Mayhem, and has been involved in solo musical projects.
Tommy was born on October 3, 1962, in Athens, Greece, to his father David Lee Thomas Bass, an American U.S. Army sergeant and mother Vassiliki who was a Miss Greece contestant for the 1957 Miss Greece beauty contest. He has one younger sibling, Athena, and she is a drummer. When Lee was about two years older, his father relocated his family back to the United States, settling in California.
Lee was introduced to his first drum sticks at just four years old, and also got his first real drum set as a teenager. He dropped out of high school and pursued an interest in music and started by joining Suite 19 from the L.A. club band Suite 19. In his teen years He listened to Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Kiss, AC/DC and Sweet. His primary drumming influences include John Bonham, Tommy Aldridge, Alex Van Halen, and Terry Bozzio.
In the late 1970s, Lee’s band, Suite 19, was a frequent on the Sunset Strip club circuit in Los Angeles along with other emerging acts like Van Halen and Quiet Riot. He was introduced to the bassist Nikki Sixx, whose bands Sister and later London played the same circuit.
Sixx was a stage band that drew heavily from Sister’s fusion along with a dramatic metal show, and also became an admirer of the drummer Lee. This was when Lee removed his surname and gained the nickname “T-bone” due to his 6′ 2 1/2′ tall height and his slim body.
When London was finally broke up in 1981, Lee and Sixx decided to create a new group together. After a short, drummer Mick Mars joined the band. In search of a charismatic frontman, Lee suggested to the others, Vince Neil, whom he knew casually from high school. Neil quickly joined the group, then Motley Crue was formed.
