Tulsi Gabbard Parents: Mike Gabbard, Carol Porter Gabbard

Tulsi Gabbard is a politician from Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district who served in the United States Army Reserve from 2013 to 2021. Gabbard was both the first Hindu and the first Samoan-American member of Congress to vote.

In the 2020 United States presidential election, she sought for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Gabbard was born in Leloaloa, Maoptasi County, on the main island of Tutuila, American Samoa, on April 12, 1981. Carol Gabbard and her husband, Mike Gabbard, had five children, the fourth of which was her.

Gabbard received 48 percent of the vote in the four-candidate Democratic primary in 2002 after redistricting. Gabbard then won the general election with 65 percent of the vote over Republican Alfonso Jimenez.

At the age of 21, Gabbard was the youngest lawmaker ever elected in Hawaii’s history, as well as the youngest woman ever elected to a U.S. state legislature.

Carol Porter Gabbard, Senator Mike Gabbard’s wife, is the mother of Tulsi Gabbard, a 2020 presidential contender. Carol Porter Gabbard and Gerald Michael “Mike” Gabbard have been married for almost 50 years. The pair married on December 27, 1968, in East Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Carol and Mike initially met at California’s Yosemite National Park in 1967. They were both working in the Camp Curry Cafeteria at the time. Carol was a waitress, and Mike was a cashier.

Carol Porter Gabbard has five children with her husband, Mike Gabbard. She had two girls, Tulsi and Vrindavan, and three boys, Bhakti, Jai, and Narayan

Tulsi’s father, Gerald Michael Gabbard, is a Samoan-American politician who was born on January 15, 1948. He has represented the Democratic Party in Hawaii’s State Senate District 20 since 2006.

Gabbard earned prominence for her efforts to prevent same-sex marriage in Hawai’i by amending the state constitution in 1998 to provide the state legislature “the ability to reserve marriage to opposite-sex couples” in line with the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

Gabbard, who was born in American Samoa, is the first person of Samoan descent to serve in the Hawaii Senate.
