Volodymyr Zelenskyy Religion: Is He A Jewish or Christian?
Zelenskyy is a Jewish. Until Russia’s invasion, Zelenskyy’s Jewish roots seemed almost incidental. But now, Jewishness has become hugely powerful and symbolic, not only for Ukraine but for contemporary Jewish identity and history.
Volodymyr Oleksandrovich Zelenskyy was born to Jewish parents on January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, then in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
His father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy, is a professor and the head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at the Kryvyi Rih State University of Economics and Technology; his mother, Rymma Zelenska, used to be an engineer.
His father’s grandfather Semyon (Simon) Ivanovych Zilenskyy was a member of the Red Army (in the 57th Guards Motor Rifle Division) during World War II; Semyon’s father and three brothers were killed during the Holocaust.
Prior to beginning primary education, Zelenskyy spent four years living in Erdenet, a Mongolian city Erdenet in which his father worked.
Zelenskyy was raised in Russian. At the age of 16, Zelenskyy passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language and was awarded an education allowance to study in Israel, however, his father refused to allow him to travel.
Later, he earned an academic degree in law at Kryvyi Rih Institute of Economics, which was then an institute within Kyiv National Economic University and today is part of Kryvyi Rih National University, however, he did not pursue a career in the field of law.
