John Ikechukwu Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, was a Nigerian actor and comedian. He ventured into the Nigerian film industry in 1998, though initially facing challenges in securing prominent roles due to limited opportunities from producers to showcase his talent in major projects.
However, his breakthrough came in 2004 with his portrayal in the hit comedy film “Mr. Ibu,” where he depicted the father of a mischievous son, a role complemented by Osita Iheme as the son. Their collaboration turned the movie into a nationwide sensation, hailed as one of the best comedy productions of its time.
His outstanding performance in the film earned him the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Comic Actor in Nigeria in 2005, solidifying his reputation and leading to the adoption of the nickname “Mr. Ibu.”
Throughout his career, Okafor featured in over 200 Nollywood productions, including notable titles such as “Mr. Ibu and His Son,” “Coffin Producers,” “Husband Suppliers,” “International Players,” “Mr. Ibu in London,” “Police Recruit,” “9 Wives,” “Ibu in Prison,” and “Keziah.”

John Ikechukwu Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, was born in Nkanu West, Nigeria, and hailed from Umunekwu in what was formerly Nigeria’s Eastern Region, now situated in Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State.
Following his elementary education, Okafor relocated to Sapele in 1974 to live with his brother after his father’s passing. In Sapele, he engaged in various odd jobs to support himself through school and assist his family financially. These included working as a hairstylist, delving into photography, and employment at a company involved in crate production.
Upon completing his secondary education, he gained admission to the College of Education in Yola. However, due to financial constraints, he had to withdraw. Eventually, when he attained financial stability, he enrolled at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu to pursue his education.
