John Ikechukwu Okafor, famously known as Mr. Ibu, was born in Nkanu West, Nigeria, and hailed from Umunekwu in what was formerly Nigeria’s Eastern Region, now situated in Nkanu West L.G.A., Enugu State.

Following his elementary education, Okafor relocated to Sapele in 1974 to live with his brother after his father’s passing. In Sapele, he engaged in various odd jobs to support himself through school and assist his family financially. These included working as a hairstylist, delving into photography, and employment at a company involved in crate production.
