Smith was born on the 25th of September 1968 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Caroline (nee Bright), an administrator for the Philadelphia School Board, along with Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran and refrigeration engineer.
His mother graduated from Carnegie Mellon University.
He grew up in Philadelphia’s West’s Wynnefield neighborhood, in which he was raised Baptist.
Smith attended Our Lady of Lourdes, which is a private Catholic elementary school located in Philadelphia. His parents split when he was 13, but they did not divorce until the year 2000.
Smith attended Overbrook High School.
