Wolfgang Petersen was born on 14 March 1941 in Emden, Hanover, Prussia, Nazi Germany. He was a German film director, producer, and screenwriter. He attended the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums in Hamburg and made his first film while still a student.
Petersen also attended the Film and Television Academy in Berlin and directed plays at Hamburg’s Ernst Deutsch Theater. His initial film productions were primarily for German television.
Petersen’s second feature film Das Boot which was a World War II epic earned six Academy Awards nominations of which he won Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. His first English language was Enemy Mine which was not a box office hit on release.
Petersen moved to the United States in 1986 and has been a resident there since. Some of Wolfgang’s well-known films include Das Boot, The Never Ending Story, Troy, and Poseidon.
