Amiens Defender Nicholas Opoku Handed A Last-minute Ghana Call-up For Angola Game On Monday

Ghana defender Nicholas Opoku who plies his trade in France has earned a last-minute call-up to the Black Stars of Ghana in Luanda ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match against Angola on Monday.

The call-up was necessitated due to the injury sustained by two of the team’s key defenders during the first leg of the 2023 AFCON qualifier encounter with Angola in Kumasi.

Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu who both started the game on Thursday sustained various degrees of injuries during the game.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the late call-up in a statement that said this development was to offer the coach more options in defense.

“Nicholas Opoku has joined the Black Stars in Luanda for the Africa Cup of Nations Group E clash against Angola on Monday.

“The Amiens defender has been drafted in to provide options for Coach Chris Hughton following the absence of Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku. The two defenders who have been key members of the Ghana squad in recent times were left out of the traveling party due to injuries,” part of the statement read.

Angola will host Ghana at the 11 November Stadium in Luanda at 4 pm on Monday.
