Dancehall sensation Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has taken a jab at Nigerian stars Burna Boy and Davido in light of their recent losses at the 66th Grammy Awards held on February 5, 2024.
Davido received three nominations at the event, including Best Global Music Performance for his track “Feel,” Best Global Album for “Timeless,” and Best African Music Performance for “Unavailable.” Unfortunately, he lost two nominations to Indian artists and the Best African Music Performance award to South Africa’s Tyla.
Burna Boy, on the other hand, garnered four nominations but did not win in any category, including Best Global Music Performance for “Alone,” Best Global Music Album for “I Told Them,” Best Rap Song for “Sittin’ on Top of the World” featuring 21 Savage, and Best Music Video.
In response, there’s been criticism suggesting that the Grammys exploit African artists for promotion without granting them proper recognition. While some fans believe the duo was unfairly treated, Shatta Wale disagrees, asserting that the process was just.
Shatta Wale remarked that aspiring musicians should be prepared to face disappointments, implying that occasional setbacks are inevitable in the industry. He suggested that learning to handle disappointments gracefully is part of becoming successful in the music business.
He acknowledged the pain of working hard and not receiving acknowledgment for one’s efforts, emphasizing the emotional toll it can take on artists.
