Stephen Appiah has shared his experience of being a father of a footballer as his son Rodney is taking baby steps in the popular sport.
Appiah said Rodney quit school to focus on football, a difficult decision but the former Black Stars captain is happy to have supported his son’s dream.
While recounting how his son ended up as a football-time footballer, Appiah jokingly stated he envies Abedi Pele, whose sons Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew have reached the highest level in football.
“Although he [Rodney] hasn’t started playing [regularly]…I must say I envy Abedi Pele [ex-Ghana star and father of Black Stars brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew] because I know the joy the man has when he’s watching football.
When I see my son even going to warm-up, the joy!,” Appiah said on TV3.
Rodney aims to be better than his father, who is regarded as a legend in Ghana after captaining the country to its first-ever World Cup in 2006.
Rodney made his professional debut early this month as he came off the bench to help Great Olympics beat Liberty Professionals in the Ghana Premier League.
It also was the teenager’s first appearance for the Accra-based club since he joined them in March this year.
