Richard Charles Blum was an American investor and husband of United States Senator Dianne Feinstein. He was the chairman and president of Blum Capital, an equity investment management firm.
Blum served on several boards of directors of companies, including CB Richard Ellis, where he was the chairman of the board until May 2009. From 2002 to his death, he was a regent at the University of California.
Blum Capital was founded in 1975 by Blum. Blum was previously chairman of CB Richard Ellis’ board of directors. He also served as director on three portfolio companies boards of directors: Fairmont Raffles Holdings International Ltd. and Current Media, L.L.C. and Myer Pty Ltd. in Australia. Blum co-founded Newbridge Capital in 1994.
Blum served as a member of the boards at multiple companies, including Northwest Airlines Corporation, Glenborough Realty Trust, Inc., Korea First Bank, URS Corporation, and National Education Corporation. Blum was also the founder and chairman of the American Himalayan Foundation. He was an Honorary Consul to Nepal and Mongolia. Blum was also a member of Berkeley’s advisory board for the Haas School of Business.
Blum joined the investment brokerage Sutro & Co. when he was 23 years old, becoming a partner before he turned 30. Blum was a partner at Sutro and managed a partnership that bought Barnum & Bailey Circus and Ringling Bros. for $8 million. Mattel purchased it four years later for $40,000,000. On the back of this deal Blum started in business for himself in 1975 by founding Blum Capital Partners. One of the first investments in Blum Capital Partners was a stake in URS Corp.
Blum was presented with the Berkeley Medal on April 25, 2009, by Robert Birgenau, Chancellor of UC Berkeley. He received it in front of the 14th Dalai Lama. His American Himalayan Foundation sponsored the talk. The Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley sponsored it.
Blum was appointed to the University of California Regents for a 12-year term by Governor Gray Davis on March 12, 2002.
