He was born on August 26, 1927, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
Samuel A. Massell Jr. was born to Samuel A. Massell (1892-1961) and the then Florence Rubin (1901-1977). He was referred to for his nickname “Buddy” during his childhood and high school years.
His graduation at the age of 16 from Druid Hills High School and then enrolled in the University of Georgia in Athens, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society. He also served as the president of Phi Epsilon Pi (Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity).
Massell was later transferred into Emory University before being drafted into the United States Army Air Force in 1946. In the following year, Massell returned to the University of Georgia and took classes at night and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commercial science from the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia in the year 1951.
He earned an LL.B. degree in 1949 from Atlanta Law School. His wife was the then Doris Middlebrooks from 1952 until her death in 2015.
Massell was a real estate agent for twenty years, being vice-president for the Allan-Grayson Realty Company, then one of the biggest commercial brokerage companies in Atlanta.
In that period, he was also elected as a founding member of the “Million Dollar Club” of the Atlanta Real Estate Board. He was also recognized on 3 occasions with the Georgia Association of Real Estate Boards for the “Outstanding Transaction of the Year.”
