Grohl is most well-known as the drummer of the Seattle grunge band Nirvana and the guitarist and frontman of Foo Fighters. Grohl, at the age of 17, joined the punk rock Scream after Kent Stax left.

After Scream’s disbandment in 1990, Grohl became Nirvana’s drummer. Nevermind (1991), Nirvana’s second album, was the first to feature Grohl on drums. It became a huge success worldwide.

Grohl started Foo Fighters in 1994 as a solo project following the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain. In 1995, the first Foo Fighters album was released. A full band was formed to tour and record under the Foo Fighters’ name.

Grohl, who is also the main singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist of the band, has also played drums on many of the songs and albums. The band has released ten studio records.

Grohl, the drummer and co-founder of the rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, has recorded and toured extensively with Queens of the Stone Age. Grohl has also participated in side-projects called Late! and Probot.

Grohl started directing Foo Fighters music videos back in 1997. His debut documentary film, Sound City, was released in 2013. It was followed by the documentary miniseries Sonic Highways (2014) and the documentary film What Drives Us (2021).
