Since 2021, she has been White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary.

She served as the chief of staff for Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the 2020 presidential election, becoming an African-American woman for the first time and lesbian to hold the position.

She will be the 35th White House Press Secretary on May 13, 2022, in the wake of the likely resignation of Jen Psaki.

This will make her the first person of African descent and the first gay person openly to hold the position of Press Secretary.

The Biden administration has announced that Karine Jean-Pierre will be the next White House press secretary, succeeding Jen Psaki, who will step down next week.

Prior to that, Jean-Pierre was the national advisor to the senior level and spokesperson for MoveOn.org and was a journalist for NBC News and MSNBC. She was also an ex-lecturer in public and international issues in Columbia University.

Jean-Pierre was born in Fort-de-France, Martinique, to Haitian parents.

She has two younger siblings, alongside whom she was raised in the Queens Village neighborhood of New York City from the age of five.

Her mother worked as a home health aide, while her father was a taxi driver. Because both parents were working for the majority of working days, Jean-Pierre was usually in charge of caring for her younger siblings.

Jean-Pierre completed the Kellenberg Memorial High School in 1993. She graduated with an B.S. from the New York Institute of Technology in 1997.

She earned her MPA from the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University (SIPA) in 2003, where she served in student government and decided to pursue politics.
