Kwasi Appiah Stripped Asamoah Gyan Off The Captaincy On His Own – Former Ghana Assistant Coach Ibrahim Tanko

Former assistant coach of the Black Stars, Ibrahim Tanko has revealed that ex-coach Kwasi Appiah decided to strip off Asamoah Gyan the captain without involving the technical team.

According Tanko, it was a sole decision by the then head coach and came to the team as a shock, with just a week to AFCON 2019.

“I don’t know what happened before the tournament, honestly,” the home-based Black Stars coach told JoySports.

“It was his [Kwasi Appiah] decision. I don’t know what happened that he took the captain from him [Asamoah Gyan] because no one within the technical team except Kwasi Appiah knew the reason why,” Tanko said.

The decision distructed the team’s performance at the tournament as Ghana bowed out of the competition at the round of 16, following a penalty shootout defeat to Tunisia.

“When we went to the tournament, you could see that there’s not too much involvement of him because of what happened before the tournament,” added Tanko.
