Condoleezza Rice Parents: John Wesley Rice, Angelena Rice

Condoleezza Rice was born in 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of high school teacher Angelena and pastor John. Rice was reared in the Titusville district of Birmingham and then on the Stillman College campus in Tuscaloosa, where her father was employed.

After the family relocated to Denver, Colorado, Rice enrolled in St. Mary’s Academy, a Catholic school for only female students, in 1967. She entered the University of Denver after receiving her diploma at the age of 16, where she later earned a BA in political science at the age of 19. She graduated from the University of Notre Dame with an MA in the same subject in 1975.

Rice began working as an intern at the State Department in 1977, under the Carter administration. She spent 1979 studying Russian at Moscow State University and working as an intern in California for the RAND Corporation. Later, in 1981, she graduated from the University of Denver with a Ph.D. in political science.

She started her long-term relationship with Stanford during that period as a fellow at the university’s Arms Control and Disarmament Program.
