Charles Csuri, better known as Chuck Csuri, was an American artist and a pioneer in the digital art field. He was described by the Smithsonian magazine as the “father of digital art and computer animation.”

Csuri attended Ohio State University on a football scholarship. He became captain of their very first national champion football team in the year 1942.

He is in the Football Hall of Fame as M.V.P. for the Big Ten Conference, and was a 16th-round selection (154th overall selection) in 1944’s NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals. Charles turned down the offer in order to serve in World War II.

Csuri served as a soldier in Csuri’s unit in the US Army from 1943 to 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1945 for bravery in the Battle of the Bulge.

Csuri returned back to Ohio State to complete his M.A. in art in the year 1948. In the year 1949, he was appointed to the faculty at his Department of Art at the University of Michigan.

He became a full professor of Art Education in 1978, as well as a professor of Computer Information Science in 1986 and Professor Emeritus in 1990. Csuri was born in Grant Town, West Virginia, to parents from Hungary, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio.

He died peacefully in Lakewood Ranch, Florida on February 27, 2022, at the age of 99.
