Gilbert Gottfried was reportedly battling a heart abnormality called Ventricular Tachycardia.

According to TMZ, Gilbert’s rep, Glenn Schwartz, revealed the actor died from a “heart abnormality called Ventricular Tachycardia due to Myotonic Dystrophy type II.”

Ventricular Tachycardia is a type of abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. It occurs when the lower chamber of the heart beats too fast to pump well and the body doesn’t receive enough oxygenated blood.

However, the comedian family in a statement on Facebook revealed that he died from “a long illness” without stating what exactly the illness was.

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness.

“In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend, and father to his two young children,” the family wrote in a statement on Facebook.
