Linstead, who was born in London in 1938, emigrated to Australia to pursue a career as an actor with an English touring company.
She quickly came to the conclusion that acting was not for her and instead discovered her calling as a casting director, working for International Casting Services and representing actresses.
Linstead later teamed up with Liz Mullinar to found M&L Casting Consultants, which went on to become a hugely influential business that oversaw casting for productions like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar as well as Australian movies like Picnic at Hanging Rock and Sunday Too Far Away.
She co-founded Hilary Linstead & Associates in 1985 with Vicki Harper, and there she represented clients like the actors Gene Kitson, Wendy Harmer, and Magda Szubansky as well as writers Louis Novra and Andrew Bovell.
In 2000, the company changed its name to HLA Management, and Kate Richter, one of her subordinates, is now in charge.
