American rapper and entrepreneur, Shawn Corey Carter, popularly known for his stage name Jay-Z, hands down has one of the best and creative stage names in hip-hop. The story behind the name is quite an interesting one.

How Did Jay-Z Get His Name?

Jay-Z initially went by the name “Jazzy” in his younger years, living in the Marcy Projects of Brooklyn.

The name “Jazzy” was later developed to Jay-Z, which he adapted as his new stage name.

The name change was to pay homage to the J and Z subway in Brooklyn, where he lived, and to salute his mentor Jaz-o, who was also a rapper and producer.

On July 18, 2013, however, the rapper announced he had removed the hyphen in Jay-Z and preferred to go by Jay-Z.
