Budding Nollywood actress, Sandra Okunzuwa has revealed that she used to have a lot of hate in her heart for men as a result of trauma from childhood sexual abuse.
According to the actress, in our part of the world people take traumatizing events like sexual abuse lightly and think a visit to a pastor will wipe the entire event off the minds of the victims.
“Sexually abused as a kid? Yes. Mental health victim? Yes. In the society we live in, people don’t talk about mental health issues; they expect you to visit your pastor and you will be alright.”
She also revealed that it was a difficult task having to combine her past with her career as an actress.
According to the thespian, she had a lot of hate for men even though she intends to marry one day. She added that despite the traumatizing childhood experience she had, she has now healed.
“Lastly, being traumatized isn’t a spiritual issue; it is a mental issue that needs a therapist. I will get married to my perfect partner someday. Before, it (the sexual abuse) kind of made me resent men, but I have healed from it and moved on. I am a lot better now,” she said.
